This Monday, Russian justice ordered the arrest of the spokesperson of the technological giant Meta, which has been banned in Russia since March 2022, for incitement to terrorism.
The Basmanni Court in Moscow approved the preventive measure against Andy Stone, based on the clause of the Criminal Code on the promotion of terrorist activities during the exercise of his professional activity.
Stone, who was declared a suspect by the Russian Interior Ministry this weekend, could be sentenced to up to 20 years in prison.
The decision has not yet come into effect because the defense has appealed to the city court in the Russian capital.
In MarchThe Russian Investigative Committee (CIR) accused Stone of temporarily lifting the ban on calls for violence against Russian military personnel on its platforms, considering it a form of political expression against Russia’s military campaign in Ukraine.
The CIR has committed to legally reviewing the actions of Stone and other employees of the American company as part of the preparation of a criminal case.
Stone said the Meta company does not allow “credible” death threats against Russian citizens, but… Moscow accused the company of circulating death threats against President Vladimir Putin.
In March 2022, a month after the outbreak of war in Ukraine, Russian justice banned the activities of Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, and classified it as an extremist organization, a decision condemned by the United States . .
