The gunman who killed five people on a footpath in the North Carolina capital is a 15-year-old teenager who was hospitalized in critical condition, local police said Friday.
Raleigh Police Chief Estella Patterson said the suspect opened fire on Thursday in an area northeast of Raleigh’s city center.H. The young man was at large for hours before he was cornered in a house and held, according to police, who did not give details of how he was injured in a critical condition.
Among the dead are a 16-year-old and an off-duty police officer.
Authorities have not yet given any details about the motive for the crimes.

The shooting happened around 5 p.m. local time (10 p.m. in Lisbon) on Thursday along the Neuse River Greenway, a paved avenue in a wooded area of an area, Raleigh Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin said.
The Raleigh shooting was the latest in a violent week across the country.
Five people were killed in a shooting at a home in Inman, South Carolina on Sunday. On Wednesday night, two police officers were shot dead in Connecticut after they were apparently ambushed over a phone call related to domestic violence.
Other officers were shot this week in Greenville, Mississippi, Decatur, Illinois, Philadelphia, Las Vegas and central Florida. Two of those agents, one in Greenville and one in Las Vegas, eventually died.
This Thursday’s violence was the 25th. mass murder involving firearms in 2022, according to the database of the Associated Press (AP) news agency, the USA TODAY newspaper and Northeastern University.
About 49,000 people were shot dead in 2021, up from 45,000 in 2020, in the United States, representing more than 130 deaths a day, more than half of whom committed suicide.
