A 70-year-old woman has given birth to twins at a hospital in Uganda after undergoing in vitro fertilization treatment, the hospital announced today on social media.
The woman had already undergone another birth three years ago.
Doctors assured that both the mother and children are in “perfect health condition”.
“This story is not just a medical success story, but demonstrates the strength and resilience of the human spirit,” said Kampala International Hospital and Women’s Fertility Centre, which shared videos of the woman, Safina Namukwaya, before and after giving birth.
The hospital said this was an unprecedented milestone in Africa due to the advanced age of the mother.
Namukwaya admitted to national television channel NTV that she suffered some complications during her pregnancy and that she does not know how to raise her children because their father abandoned them.
“Men don’t like to hear that you’re having more than one child. Even after I was admitted, my husband never showed up,” she said.
The mother also opened up about some past traumas, including miscarriages and the loss of a husband in the early 1990s, and recalled being mocked by a boy who told her she was “cursed” and would not have children.
