Russian citizen arrested in Norway in possession of drones, videos and photos

The Norwegian authorities ordered this Friday the preventive detention of a Russian for two days in possession of two drones and a significant number of photographs and videos recorded in that country, reports AFP.

Vitali Rustanov, 50, was arrested on Wednesday at the Storskog border post, the only border crossing between Norway and Russia, in the Arctic, when he was trying to return to Russia with two drones and digital storage equipment.

This Friday, a judge ordered preventive detention for two weeks, as requested by the police.

“There are reasons to believe that the accused will try to flee if he is not in preventive detention,” said the magistrate, claiming that the person in question had Russian and Israeli identity documents.

According to the court ruling, consulted by AFP, Rustanov has been in Norway since August and admitted flying drones “all over the country.”

Like other Western countries, in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Norway has banned Russian individuals and entities from flying over its territory.

Violation of these sanctions is punishable by three years’ imprisonment.
