Ukraine claims sabotage of railway line in Russia’s Siberia region (with videos)

Ukraine on Friday claimed responsibility for attacks on a Russian railway line in Siberia, thousands of miles from the frontline, in what is the latest sabotage incident reported on Russian territory.

Russian authorities have faced multiple attacks on their transportation infrastructure since the beginning of the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. However, this is the first time that such attacks have taken place so far from the front.

The first attack took place last Wednesday evening in Severomouisk’s Besolov tunnel, the longest in Russia, a source from the Security Services of Ukraine (SBU) told AFP.

The second attack targeted an alternative rail route, to which train traffic was diverted after the first attack, the same source assured. “The Russians fell into the SBU trap twice: another fuel train exploded on the Baikal-Amur railway” when “it passed over a 35-meter-high bridge”he added.

The SBU made no comment on these revelations and there was no immediate response from the Russian side to this latest incident.

The Baza Telegram channel, close to Russian security services and followed by more than a million users, reported on Friday that “sabotage” caused explosions in two trains “in the same area” of Buryatia.

This Friday, Russia announced that it had arrested a citizen with dual Russian and Italian nationality, suspected of carrying out sabotage attacks on a railway and an air base on orders from Ukraine.

According to sources cited by the economic newspaper Kommersant, an investigation has now been launched into Wednesday’s incident.

“The Russian special services have to get used to the fact that our people are everywhere. Even in distant Buryatia,” the Ukrainian source told AFP.

The Baikal-Amur line is more than 4,000 kilometers long, along the border of China and Mongolia.
