North Korea threatens to shoot down US satellites

North Korea threatened this Saturday to shoot down American spy satellites in response to “any attack” against the satellite put into orbit by Pyongyang on November 21, the official North Korean news agency reported.

Pyongyang claimed that such an operation would be considered a “declaration of war,” KCNA reported.

According to the France-Presse news agency (AFP), the statement comes after a North American official explained that Washington has several “reversible and irreversible means” to “deprive an adversary of its space capabilities and counteract them.”

After two failed attempts, in May and August, Pyongyang managed to launch a spy satellite into orbit on November 21. South Korea confirmed Thursday that the launch was successful.

“If the United States attempts to violate the legitimate territory of a sovereign state,” Pyongyang “will consider adopting self-defense measures to weaken or destroy the viability of American spy satellites,” a spokesperson for the Korean US Foreign Ministry warned.

North Korea claimed this week that the spy satellite captured images of the US Presidency, the White House, the Pentagon and other important US defense facilities.

According to South Korea, Russia helped North Korea launch this satellite.
