At least two dead in the 7.6 magnitude earthquake that hit the Philippines

At least two people died and four were injured due to the earthquake of magnitude 7.6 on the Richter scale that struck the island of Mindanao, in the southern Philippines, this Saturday.

The fatalities are a pregnant woman who died in the city of Tagum and a 30-year-old man who died after a wall fell from the house where he lived, according to the AFP agency.

The authorities are inspecting homes this Sunday to verify that there was no damage to the structure. Several roads were cracked, but there are no reports of them becoming impassable.

The earthquake was recorded at 10:37 p.m. local time (2:37 p.m. in Lisbon) at a depth of 32 kilometers, announced the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The earthquake was followed by several aftershocks, including some of magnitude 6.4 and 5.8, according to USGS data.

This is the second time an earthquake has hit the island of Mindanao in recent weeks. On November 15, nine people died after a magnitude 6.7 earthquake off the island of Mindanao.

The Philippines is located on the so-called “ring of fire” of the Pacific, an area of great seismic and volcanic activity where around seven thousand earthquakes are recorded every year.
