The Indian Meteorological Department placed this Monday several districts from the state of Andhra Pradesh, in the south of the country, in Red alert because of the threat of Heavy rainsbefore the arrival of Cyclone Michaung.
The cyclone is currently about 110 kilometers from the coast, with sustained winds of 80 to 90 kilometers per hour, the department said in a statement.
In the next few hours the authorities hope that the cyclone continues to gain strength to achieve bursts of 110 kilometers per hourmoving to the category of “severe cyclonic storm”.
The Indian Meteorological Department expects the cyclone to hit the Andhra Pradesh coast early on Tuesday, between the cities of Nellore and Machilipatnam, and has declared a red alert in several districts of the region and in the state of Tamil Nadu, due to strong winds and precipitation.
The head of the Andhra Pradesh Disaster Management Authority warned that some parts of the state record heavy rain throughout the day and asked fishermen to remain in port, according to a statement.
Cyclones are common along the Indian coast. In June, Biparjoy caused at least two deaths in northwest India, while Tauktae, one of the most violent to hit the western coast of the Asian country in recent years, caused at least 145 deaths in 2021.
