Brazilian police are investigating a Portuguese national on suspicion of child trafficking

Brazil’s federal police are investigating a Portuguese national for possible involvement in international child trafficking after he registered two newborn Brazilian babies in his name, the authority announced Monday.

The investigation began after the Public Prosecutor of the State of São Paulo received information on November 30 that a newborn baby in the city of Valinhos, who is still hospitalized, had been abandoned by his mother and had been registered as the son of a Portuguese citizen, not identified by police.

“Suspicions fell on the possible international trafficking of babies, and it was found that the same man of Portuguese nationality had registered another newborn in the same hospital as his daughter in less than a month”says a statement from the Federal Police.

The police added that they found that this data “of paternity occurred as a result of the use of false documents before the state courts, in various courts, accompanied by requests for unilateral custody of the babies, which would allow him to leave the country without the mother’s consent”.

In the statement, police said that four search warrants, one search warrant and a preventive arrest warrant are being executed in the cities of Valinhos and Itatiba, in the state of São Paulo, indicating the participation of several people in this case. child trafficking network.

Those involved may be liable for the crimes of international child trafficking, false registration, promoting an act intended to send a child or adolescent abroad without observing legal formalities or for the purpose of making a profit , among other crimes punishable by sentences that may exceed 18 years. years in prison.
