A court in the northern Italy city of Asti on Monday sentenced to 17 years in prison a jeweler accused of killing two men and wounding a third while robbing his store in 2021.
Mario Roggero was found guilty of the murders of Giuseppe Mazzarino, 58, and Andrea Spinelli, 44, and the attempted murder of Alessandro Modica.
Despite suffering a leg injury during the robbery of the store in the town of La Morra, Cuneo province, Alessandro Modica managed to escape but was arrested by authorities a few hours after the crime.
The Public Prosecution Service previously demanded a prison sentence of 14 years against 68-year-old Roggero.
“The word ‘defense’ is inconsistent with the video (of the shooting), which shows an execution,” the prosecutor said in presenting the sentencing request.
Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Matteo Salvini, expressed his solidarity with Mario Roggero.
“The jeweler defended his life and his business,” said Salvini, also leader of Italy’s League party (far right).
“The real criminals are the ones who deserve a prison sentence,” he added.
