Guinea-Bissau television resumes its activities after being paralyzed by military orders

The Television of Guinea-Bissau (TGB) resumed its activities this Tuesday after having received the order to stop by orders of the military who occupied its facilities on Monday, a source from the station informed Lusa.

According to the source, an official from the Presidency of the Republic contacted the Television directorate, who informed them that they had to resume activities “normally” and also explained that there was “no order” from that institution to suspend transmissions. .

On Monday, a TGB source told Lusa that “heavily armed soldiers” entered the station and ordered the suspension of broadcasts and the departure of employees.

The reported situation occurred after the announcement by the President of the Republic of the dissolution of the National Popular Assembly, made by Umaro Sissoco Embaló himself and made official in a presidential decree.

The same source reported that the military arrived at the TGB facilities in vans and were “heavily armed and hooded.”

The source specified that “they asked for the general director, who was asked for the keys to the office and the cars” and that they ordered the person in charge to “leave the television.”

The TGB facilities were occupied by the military since Monday, around 2:00 p.m. in Bissau (same time as Lisbon), but this Tuesday they abandoned the facilities and the general director returned to the station.

Guinea-Bissau is experiencing moments of political tension: the country’s president has decided to dissolve Parliament.

The political tension began when the Public Ministry ordered the arrest of two members of the Government suspected of having improperly paid a State debt to 11 businessmen.

The two members of the Government were preventively detained in the Judicial Police (PJ) when they were taken from there by the National Guard who took them to their barracks, which was attacked hours later by the Armed Forces.

Two soldiers lost their lives in the clashes, the commander of the National Guard was arrested and the two members of the Government were returned to the PJ cells.
