Health Minister Orazio Schillaci lamented a “terrible tragedy” and expressed his condolences to the families of the victims.
“We hope that the investigation will clarify the causes of the fire as soon as possible,” he said in a statement on Saturday morning.
According to initial investigations, the fire started at the back of the hospital – in the room where hospital waste is stored – and spread to the floor where the outpatient clinic is located, later reaching the emergency room and intensive care unit.
The Tivoli Public Prosecutor’s Office opened an investigation after the fire and an autopsy will be performed on the victims’ bodies to determine the cause of death.
Patients were transferred to other hospitals in the region or to a nearby municipal gym, Tivoli City Hall said on Facebook.
