Narges Mohammadi will start a hunger strike on the day he receives the Nobel Peace Prize

Iranian activist Narges Mohammadi, currently detained in her country, will start a new hunger strike on Sunday, the day she receives the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo, where she will be represented by her children, her family announced on Saturday.

Mohammadi, who specifically fights against the mandatory use of the hijab and the death penalty in Iran, is going on a hunger strike “in solidarity with the Baha’i religious minority,” her brother and husband said at a press conference in the Norwegian capital.on the eve of the Nobel Prize ceremony.

The activist, who suffered a heart attack in 2022, went on hunger strike in November against the lack of medical care in prison and the mandatory wearing of the Islamic veil, after he was refused a hospital appointment because he refused to wear the hijab .

In the previous month, the Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the prestigious prize to Mohammadi “for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and for promoting human rights and freedom for all”.

He is currently serving a 10-year prison sentence for “spreading propaganda against the state”, and has been in and out of several Iranian prisons in recent years.

The journalist has not seen her children, who have been in Paris for eight years and spent a long time in solitary confinement. His activism cost him thirteen arrests, five sentences for a total of 31 years in prison and 154 lashes.
