The Turkish president repudiates the US veto of the “Israel protection council” at the UN

This Saturday, Turkey’s president deplored the US veto of a resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza and called the UN Security Council “Israel’s protection council.”

“Since October 7 [dia do ataque do Hamas]The Security Council has become a council for the protection and defense of Israel,” said Recep Tayyip Erdogan in a speech on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Declaration of Human Rights.

The Security Council resolution received 13 votes in favor, a veto from the United States and one abstention (United Kingdom).

The vote was the result of an unprecedented initiative by the UN Secretary General, António Guterres, invoking article 99 of the United Nations Charter.

The article in question allows the Secretary-General to draw the attention of the Security Council to an issue that could endanger international peace and security.

“Is this justice?” Erdogan asked, reaffirming that “the world is bigger than five,” referring to the permanent members of the Security Council (China, the United States, France, the United Kingdom and Russia).

“Today, the place where the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights is flagrantly violated is Gaza and the occupied Palestinian territories,” he said, according to the Turkish Anadolu agency.

Erdogan said Islamophobia and xenophobia, which he attributed to Western societies, were among the main threats to human rights.

“The group most victim of xenophobic, racist, discriminatory and fascist practices is, without a doubt, Muslims, who make up the majority of immigrants,” he stated.

He also said that the concepts of terrorist and terrorism are attributed to Islam.

“It has become a cover for attacking Muslims, insulting them and massacring innocents,” he declared.

The Turkish leader also stated that there can be a just world, “but not with the United States,” which, he said, is on Israel’s side.

The UN resolution was introduced more than two months after the start of the war in Gaza, triggered by the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, which Israeli authorities say killed 1,200 people.

Israeli retaliatory bombings in the Gaza Strip, where Hamas seized power in 2007, killed about 17,500 people, according to the Islamist group.

Israel considers Hamas a terrorist organization.
