Guterres laments the paralysis of the UN in the face of the war in Gaza

This Sunday, the UN Secretary General deplored the paralysis of the United Nations in the face of the war between the Islamist group Hamas and the failure of the Security Council to vote in favor of a ceasefire in Gaza.

In a speech at the Doha Forum in Qatar, António Guterres said the Security Council is “paralyzed by geostrategic divisions” that threaten its ability to find solutions to the war in the Gaza Strip.

‘The authority and credibility of the Security Council have been seriously damaged’ for his late response to the conflict, a damage to his reputation that Guterres said was exacerbated by the United States’ veto on Friday of a resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.

The draft resolution was drafted following Guterres’ unprecedented invocation of Article 99 of the United Nations Charter, which allows the UN Secretary-General to draw the attention of the Security Council to an issue affecting “the maintenance of peace and endanger international security.”

“I reiterated my call to declare a humanitarian ceasefire (…) Unfortunately, the Security Council has not done so. I can promise that I will not give up,” Guterres lamented.

The United States, Israel’s ally, reiterated its position against a ceasefire on Friday.

“We are at serious risk of the collapse of the humanitarian system,” Guterres also warned at the Doha Forum.

“The situation is rapidly evolving into a catastrophe with potentially irreversible consequences for the Palestinians as a whole and for peace and security in the region,” the UN Secretary-General said..

The Health Ministry of the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip published a report of 17,490 deaths, most of them women and children, in the Palestinian enclave since the war with Israel began in early October.

His unprecedented attack on Israel on October 7 killed more than 1,200 Israelis, most of them civilians, in addition to more than 240 kidnapped people, according to Jewish state authorities.
