UN Climate Chief Calls for End to “Unnecessary Tactical Blockades”

The head of the UN climate agency called on countries meeting at COP28 to remove “unnecessary tactical blockades”on the eve of the long-awaited end of the conference, which focuses on The future of fossil fuels..

“We are here to discuss two issues,” said Simon Stiell, in Dubai, citing the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and “ways” to support the transition of less developed countries towards renewable energy, pending a new proposal for the final text.

It is necessary to reach a phase out commitment or at least the reduce the use of fossil fuelswhile guaranteeing financing for poorest countries.

The two issues are inextricably linked, said the UN Executive Secretary for Climate Change.

“It is possible to achieve higher levels of ambition on both issues (…). Each step back from maximum ambition will cost millions of lives”he told reporters, highlighting his opposition to a small steps policy.

“We do not have a minute to lose,” he stressed, at a time when COP28 theoretically ends on Tuesday, but key issues have not yet been resolved.

COP28 president Sultan Al Jaber, also the head of the United Arab Emirates oil company, promised a “historic agreement” on December 12, the anniversary of the Paris agreement.
