Azerbaijan, a major oil producer, will host the 2024 United Nations climate change conference, COP29, the presidency of COP28, which will take place in Dubai, officially announced.
“The COP28 Presidency congratulates Azerbaijan on being chosen to host COP29 next year. We look forward to working together to continue making progress on climate action, ensuring we keep 1.5°C within reach and leave no one behind” , stated the presidency of COP28, in charge of the United Arab Emirates.
Azerbaijan’s Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources, Mukhtar Babayev, announced on Saturday that “there is consensus” for Azerbaijan to host COP29, after rival Armenia withdrew its candidacy.
With this election, the UN climate summit will be held for the third consecutive year in an oil or gas producing country. Oil and gas, along with coal, are the main causes of global warming.
Climate summits aim to combat global warming and prevent temperatures from rising more than 2°C, or preferably no more than 1.5°C, compared to pre-industrial times.
