The Israeli military admitted on Tuesday that about a tenth of Israeli soldiers killed in the Gaza Strip were struck by its own forces or died in accidents.
“So far, 105 deaths have occurred since the start of ground operations, of which 20 were accidents,” a military spokesman told Agence France-Presse.
Thirteen soldiers were killed by “friendly fire”, while the other seven died in accidents involving vehicles or weapons.
The ongoing war was sparked by the attack on Israeli territory on October 7, in which Hamas terrorists killed around 1,200 people, according to Israeli authorities.
Hamas also took more than 200 hostages, 138 of whom remain in captivity.
In response, Israel pledged to destroy Hamas, which has been in power in the Gaza Strip since 2007 and is classified as a terrorist organization by the United States, the European Union and Israel after it launched successive attacks in the Gaza Strip.
According to Gaza authorities, the Israeli strikes have killed more than 18,000 civilians.
