At least 45 injured in overnight missile attack in kyiv

At least 45 people were injured in kyiv in a missile attack launched by Russia and several buildings were damaged, the mayor said.

A series of loud explosions were heard in kyiv around 03:00 (01:00 in Lisbon), when the city’s air defenses were activated for the second time in a week.

Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on the Telegram messaging platform that debris from intercepted missiles fell in the eastern Dniprovskyi district, injuring at least 45 people.

Klitschko added that 18 people were hospitalized and 27 received medical treatment at the scene.

The attack set fires in an apartment building, a private home and several cars and shattered the windows of a children’s hospital, he said.

Remnants of the falling missiles also damaged the water supply system of the Dniprovskyi district.

On Monday, a Russian missile attack destroyed several homes on the outskirts of kyiv and left more than 100 families temporarily without power.

This morning’s attack occurred at a time when Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was meeting at the White House with the leader of the United States, Joe Biden.

During the meeting, Biden announced that he approved $200 million (more than €185 million) in military aid to Ukraine.

The United States Congress blocks a package worth more than $106 billion (€98.3 billion), which includes funds for Ukraine and Israel.

The United States is currently the largest provider of military support to kyiv, with approved support worth more than $110 billion (€102 billion) since the Russian invasion in February 2022.

In the meeting with Zelensky, the US president also warned that Russian leader Vladimir Putin wants to attack Ukraine’s power plants again, to worsen the situation during the winter.

Ukrainian telecommunications provider Kyivstar, which has more than 24 million mobile customers nationwide, said services were disrupted on Tuesday by a “powerful cyberattack.”

The same attack also disrupted the airstrike warning system in a part of the kyiv region, admitted the head of the Kiev regional administration, Ruslan Kravchenko.
