United States climate envoy John Kerry welcomed the deal reached at COP28 in Dubai on Wednesday, saying it is “a reason for optimism” in a world in conflict.
“I think everyone will be happy that in a world rocked by the war in Ukraine and the Middle East and all the other challenges, there is a reason to be optimistic, to be grateful and to pull ourselves together all together. congratulations,” said Kerry.
Countries meeting at the climate summit today approved “by consensus” a decision calling for a “transition” to the phase-out of fossil fuels, the chairman of COP28 in Dubai announced.
At the opening of the closing plenary session, delegates adopted the decision prepared by the United Arab Emirates.
It is a “historic decision to accelerate climate action,” said Sultan Al Jaber, president of the UN conference.
