At least 45 injured in Russian night rocket attack on Kiev

At least 45 people were injured in a rocket attack fired by Russia in Kiev this Wednesday, and several buildings were damaged, the mayor said.

A series of loud explosions were heard in Kiev around 3 a.m. (1 a.m. in Lisbon), as the city’s air defenses were activated for the second time in the space of a week.

Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko said this on messaging platform Telegram Debris from intercepted rockets fell in the eastern Dniprovskyi district, injuring at least 45 people.

Klitschko added that 18 people were hospitalized, while 27 people received medical treatment on site.

The attack caused fires at an apartment complex, a private home and several cars and shattered the windows of a children’s hospital, he said.

Falling rocket debris also damaged the water supply system of the Dniprovskyi district.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky responded to the attack by stating that “Russia has reaffirmed its title as a shameful country.”

On Monday, a Russian missile attack destroyed several houses on the outskirts of Kiev, leaving more than a hundred families temporarily without electricity.

This morning’s attack came as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was meeting at the White House with United States leader Joe Biden.

During the meeting, Biden announced that he approved 200 million dollars (more than 185 million euros) in military aid to Ukraine.

The US Congress is blocking a package worth more than 106 billion dollars (98.3 billion euros), which also includes funds for Ukraine and Israel.

The US is currently the largest provider of military aid to Kiev, with approved aid worth more than $110 billion (102 billion euros) since the Russian invasion in February 2022.

In the meeting with Zelensky, the US president also warned that Russian leader Vladimir Putin wants to attack Ukrainian power stations again to worsen the situation during the winter.

Ukrainian telecommunications provider Kyivstar, which has more than 24 million mobile customers across the country, said on Tuesday that services were disrupted by a “powerful cyber attack”.

The same attack also disrupted the airstrike warning system in part of the Kyiv region, the head of the Kyiv Regional Administration, Ruslan Kravchenko, admitted.
