The month of November 2023 was the hottest ever recorded globally, with an average temperature of 14.22°C. The month is estimated to have been around 1.75°C warmer than the pre-industrial average of 1850-1900.
According to a statement from the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA), last month was the ninth warmest November ever recorded in Portugal. The average value of the mean air temperature, 13.78 °C, was above normal, with an anomaly of + 1.33 °C.
Rainfall was above average in most of Europe: Storm Ciarán hit many regions, with Italy standing out with heavy rain and flooding.
The period from November 9 to 20 and from November 28 to 29, recorded temperature values always above the monthly average, especially in the minimum air temperature, which stands out on days 11 to 13 and 29.
Elsewhere, drier than average conditions were observed in Iceland and much of Scandinavia, the north of the United Kingdom, parts of Spain, eastern Greece and regions of western Russia.
