Fresh shelling hit Russia’s Belgorod region, bordering Ukraine, on Sunday, wounding at least four people, the governor said, and such incidents have multiplied in recent days.
In Telegram, the governor, Vyacheslav Gladkov, indicated that three members of the same family had been injured during a bombing in Belgorod, the capital of the homonymous region. Two of the wounded, hit by shrapnel, were taken to hospital.
According to this source, houses and cars suffered “minor damage”. The fourth injured is an elderly man who suffered a “bruise” during shelling near Belgorod, according to the governor.
In a statement, the Russian Investigative Committee said that this Sunday “almost 16 explosions” were heard in this city of 330,000 inhabitants, which, since the beginning of the offensive in Ukraine, had rarely been hit by gunfire.
A region particularly attacked in recent days
But this week, local authorities repeatedly denounced attacks by the Ukrainian army in the city or nearby areas.
On Saturday, Governor Gladkov announced a shelling of an oil depot near Belgorod. The day before, a power plant had been attacked in Belgorod, causing a power outage.
Until now, this large city had been little affected by the fire, unlike other towns in the region closer to the border with Ukraine, where deadly strikes have already taken place several times in recent months.
Adding to the tension, the Russian Defense Ministry said 11 people were killed Saturday at a military base in the region, and 15 others wounded, in a shooting described as an “attack” by the Russian military.
