Car collides with Biden’s entourage vehicle

A car collided with a vehicle belonging to the US president’s entourage on Sunday as Joe Biden left his campaign headquarters in Delaware.

After a loud bang caused by a car colliding with an SUV belonging to Biden’s entourage, the US president was safely removed from the scene.

“Both the president and the first lady are doing well,” a White House official told an AFP reporter who witnessed the incident.

Before the clash, Biden took questions from reporters at campaign headquarters in Wilmington, where the president and first lady Jill Biden dined with officials.

Biden had just answered a question when he was surprised by the loud bang of the collision, at a time when the first lady was already in one of the delegation’s vehicles, North American media said.

After the collision, the silver car with Delaware registration was surrounded by members of Biden’s security team.

“A Secret Service vehicle en route to the President’s motorcade was struck by another vehicle in Wilmington,” said Special Agent Steve Kopek, spokesman for the Secret Service. “There was no protective significance associated with this event and the president’s escort departed without incident,” he added.

Biden arrived safely at his family home without further incident.

Wilmington police said they were “investigating the collision,” which caused no injuries.
