Ukrainian authorities on Saturday urged Kiev residents to try to conserve electricity from late afternoon to avoid emergency power cuts after a missile hit a power plant on the outskirts of the city.
The electricity company Ukrenergo asked via the social network Facebook to charge mobile phones and portable batteries before the start of the night, as well as to prepare dinner in advance, if they have an electric stove.
The reason is the possibility of attacks on substations equipped with transformers necessary to reduce the voltage of the power so that it can be distributed to consumers, with the aim of leaving thousands of citizens without electricity, Ukrenergo said.
“If our substation is damaged or destroyed, Ukrenergo workers immediately try to find other connections”, which are often not as reliable, and therefore it is necessary to save money, he added.
The company said that if consumption increased because it is unable to transfer energy in other ways, it would be forced to put in an emergency shutdown and request that consumption stop after 11pm local time.
