Russian journalist Yekaterina Duntsova this Wednesday handed over to Russia’s Central Election Commission (CEC) registration documentation for the group that supported her candidacy for the Russian presidency in March’s presidential elections.
“We have just delivered to the CEC the documentation for the registration of the popular initiative group that supported my candidacy for the Russian presidency on December 17”the candidate said via Telegram.
According to Duntsova, the CEC now has five days to analyze the documents and proceed with registration.
“I emphasize that there are no reasons to refuse the registration. Then we can open the (bank) account and start a new phase of our campaign, collecting signatures”necessary for independent candidates, he said.
The journalist added that signature collection centers will be opened in many cities across the country.
“We need volunteers to work in these centers. As before, I count on your help. I hope that together we can collect 300,000 signatures by the end of January”he claimed.
On Sunday, 40-year-old Duntsova received the support of 521 of the more than 700 participants in an independent congress in Moscow.
The election candidate announced her election project in November, stating that “the country has been going in the wrong direction for the past ten years,” a path that leads to “self-destruction.”
Duntsova calls, among other things, for a cessation of hostilities in Ukraine, the introduction of democratic reforms and the release of political prisoners.
According to Russian election authorities, in addition to Duntsova, Russian President Vladimir Putin – who will seek re-election – and ultra-nationalist leader Leonid Slutsky, thirteen other candidates have filed to participate in the Russian presidential elections.
The opposition to the Kremlin sees the elections as a referendum on the current war, in which Russia has failed to achieve the goals it set for itself in February 2022 and which, according to the West, has caused more than 300,000 victims.
According to official polls in recent days, 80% of Russians support the Putin government, which has presided over the country since 2000, with an interval of four years (2008-2012) as prime minister.
