Rudy Giuliani has filed for bankruptcy after being ordered to pay $148 million (135 million euros) to two former election officials in Georgia for defamation and racist threats and intimidation.
In his bankruptcy filing, the former mayor of New York listed almost $153 million (about $140 million at the current exchange rate) in existing or potential debts, including nearly $1 million (912,000) in tax debts. I owe your lawyers and many millions of dollars in possible judgments in lawsuits against you.
He estimated his fortune at between one and ten million dollars (9.1 million euros).
The largest debt is the $148 million he was ordered to pay a week ago for defaming election officials in Georgia following the 2020 presidential election.
Ted Goodman, a political adviser and spokesman for Giuliani, a former Republican presidential candidate and a senior Justice Department official, said in a statement that the request “should not come as a surprise to anyone.”
“No one could reasonably believe that ‘Mayor’ Giuliani would be able to pay such a large penalty amount”Goodman added.
He said the bankruptcy filing will give Giuliani the “opportunity and time to appeal, while providing transparency into his finances under the supervision of the bankruptcy court to ensure that all creditors are treated equally and fairly throughout the process.” ”
Declaring bankruptcy, however, likely won’t take away the $148 million in damages a jury awarded to longtime Georgia election workers Ruby Freeman and Wandrea “Shaye” Moss. The Bankruptcy Code does not allow discharge of debts arising from “intentional and malicious damage” caused to another person
