An Israeli general was killed in combat in Gaza, the highest among the 139 Israeli soldiers killed in the Gaza Strip since the start of Israel’s ground offensive on Palestinian territory.
According to Friday’s announcement by the Israeli army, retired Major General Tal Shua, 31 years old, died in the south of the Palestinian enclave while fighting alongside a technical battalion.
Since the start of the ground offensive on October 27, Israeli forces have reported deaths in combat of officers of various ranks, but until today the highest-ranking officer has been a commander.
According to the army statement, a lieutenant, Shai Ayeli, 21, who served as a cadet in a rescue unit in northern Gaza, also died in recent hours.
In addition, three soldiers from different units in different parts of Gaza were seriously injured.
The war between Israel and Hamas began on October 7, when the Islamist group launched an attack on Israeli territory, resulting in more than 1,200 deaths and nearly 240 kidnappings, according to Tel Aviv.
Since the attack, 471 Israeli military personnel have been killed and 1,929 injured, including 771 during the military operation in the Palestinian enclave, according to Israeli Defense Forces data.
In turn, the Israeli military offensive left more than 20,000 dead and 53,300 injured, most of them civilians and many of them children and women, according to the Gaza Ministry of Health, controlled by Hamas, which has been in power in Gaza since 2007.
