Guterres sees Israeli offensive as a “real problem” in sending aid to Gaza

The Secretary General of the UN, António Guterres, stated this Friday that the “real problem” of sending humanitarian aid to Gaza is the “way in which Israel conducts the offensive” in this Palestinian enclave.

“Many people measure the effectiveness of humanitarian operations in Gaza based on the number of trucks from the Egyptian Red Crescent, the UN and our partners that are allowed to cross the border. It is a mistake,” Guterres told the press in New York.

“The real problem is the way in which Israel carries out its offensive, which creates enormous obstacles to the distribution of humanitarian aid to Gaza,” the secretary general stressed.

“A humanitarian ceasefire is the only way to begin to respond to the desperate needs of the people of Gaza and put an end to the nightmare they are experiencing,” said Guterres, shortly after its approval by the UN Security Council. , after a week of intense negotiations. and successive postponements, of a resolution that demands the sending of “large-scale” humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.

The legally binding resolution, presented by the United Arab Emirates (UAE), had to be rewritten several times throughout the week due to objections from the United States, which has veto power in the organization and which exercised it in previous votes. .

Today Washington abstained, as did Russia (also with veto power), allowing the resolution to be approved with 13 favorable votes, which unlike the first versions does not require an immediate ceasefire.
