This Friday, the Portuguese Government welcomed the resolution approved by the UN Security Council, which “facilitates humanitarian aid” and can be used in the perspective of a “permanent ceasefire.”
“Portugal welcomes the adoption of the latest resolution on Gaza in the Security Council [da ONU]. The resolution, although it does not fully correspond to the objectives, facilitates the entry of humanitarian aid and should be used as a basis to achieve the necessary permanent ceasefire,” indicates a note from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs published on the social network X.
The United Nations Security Council approved today, after a week of intense negotiations and successive postponements, a resolution that demands the sending of “large-scale” humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.
The legally binding resolution, presented by the United Arab Emirates (UAE), had to be rewritten several times throughout the week due to objections from the United States, which has veto power in the organization and which exercised it in previous votes. .
Today Washington abstained, as did Russia (also with veto power), allowing the resolution to be approved with 13 favorable votes, which unlike the first versions does not require an immediate ceasefire.
The text asks the UN Secretary General, António Guterres, to appoint a special coordinator to supervise and verify the sending of humanitarian aid to the Palestinian enclave, the target of constant bombings since the start of the war between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas. on October 7.
