This Saturday, the Prime Minister of Israel thanked the President of the United States for the American position in the UN Security Council, which issued a resolution to bring humanitarian aid to Gaza without demanding a ceasefire in the war against Hamas.
Benjamin Netanyahu expressed to United States President Joe Biden his “appreciation for the American position in the UN Security Council,” the prime minister’s office said in a statement.
“It also made clear that Israel will continue the war until all its objectives are achieved,” namely the destruction of Hamas and the rescue of all hostages still held captive in the Gaza Strip by the Islamist group, he added.
The United Nations Security Council approved a resolution on Friday aimed at increasing humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, after a week of intensive negotiations.
The initiative, presented by the United Arab Emirates, had to be rewritten several times due to objections from the United States, which has a veto in the body and ultimately abstained.
The text asks UN Secretary-General António Guterres to appoint a special coordinator to monitor and verify the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Palestinian enclave.
Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip, called the resolution “insufficient” not to call for a permanent ceasefire.
“The US government has worked hard to debunk this resolution and provide it with this weak wording, which allows the fascist occupation to complete its mission of destruction, murder and terrorism in the Gaza Strip and thereby undermine the will of the international community.” , he added.
The US has twice vetoed UN resolutions calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.
Since the start of the war between Israel and the Islamist group Hamas on October 7, the Gaza Strip – where more than 20,200 people have been killed – has been experiencing an unprecedented humanitarian crisis, with shortages of drinking water, food, medicine, electricity and fuel. , as well as the collapse of hospitals and the emergence of epidemics in the middle of winter.
Although Israel is allowing trucks carrying humanitarian aid to enter the enclave, this is happening piecemeal and in insufficient quantities for the 1.9 million displaced people – almost the entire population of the Strip – as Israeli authorities take the time to thoroughly examine each truck to check. before entering the enclave.
Israel declared war on Hamas following a brutal attack by the Islamist group on Israeli territory that left more than 1,200 people dead.
