A storm on Christmas Eve caused the death of a woman in eastern Australia, where around 120,000 homes were left without power, authorities reported today.
A 59-year-old woman was killed by a falling tree caused by gusts of wind in the urban area of the Gold Coast (east), said Jaye Newton of the emergency ambulance service.
“It was like a disaster zone, there were trees all over the road,” he added.
The storm downed power lines in Brisbane, Queensland’s regional capital, local electricity provider Energex said, finding “catastrophic and widespread damage on the scale of a cyclone.”
“Over 800 power lines out of service, 120,000 customers without power. It will take days to restore service,” the company wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
Australian weather services indicated that another strong storm is expected during the day, with gusty winds, hail and heavy rain.
