Israel says there have been no Hamas attacks from tunnels since the start of the war

The Israeli military said on Wednesday that there have been no attacks on Israeli territory from the tunnels used by Hamas in the Palestinian enclave since the start of the war in the Gaza Strip on October 7.

“Although there have been several incidents near the border, there has not been a single attack from tunnels on Israeli territory during the war so far,” the spokesperson said. The army reported this in a statement.

Israel has repeatedly accused the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas of using an extensive network of tunnels to hide, store weapons and attack Israeli forces.

Last week, The Israeli army has unveiled a tunnel in Gaza about four kilometers long and fifty meters deep, the largest it discovered in the Palestinian enclave, located less than half a kilometer from the border with Israel.

The tunnel was one of Hamas’s entry points for the unprecedented and deadly October 7 attack on Israeli territory.

Following the attack, Israel launched a military offensive in the Gaza Strip, and after more than two and a half months, the country claims it has not been the target of any attack from the extensive network of tunnels in the Palestinian enclave.

Among other reasons stated, Tel Aviv states that this is due to the actions of a specialized unit.

The unit, created during Israel’s 2014 war against Hamas, provides information to Israeli forces on “the route of the tunnels and how to block them,” the statement said.

“We will continue to discover and obstruct Hamas’ underground routes until they can no longer use them, even if this may take a long time,” the Israeli military admitted.

Israeli forces aim, among other things, to destroy these tunnels in towns such as Khan Younis, in the south of the coastal enclave and close to the border with Egypt.

Hamas’ unprecedented attack on Israel included the infiltration of about 3,000 militia members into Israeli territory, who Israeli authorities say killed about 1,200 people and kidnapped more than 200.

In retaliation, Israel declared war on Hamas and launched a military offensive that killed at least 21,110 and wounded 55,243, most of them children and women, according to the health ministry of the Palestinian enclave, which has been under the Islamist group’s control since 2007.
