The Brazilian government, through the Minister of Foreign Affairs, reiterated this Wednesday its willingness to receive the President of Russia at the G20 summit in 2024 and devalued the international detention order.
“If he wants to come, we will be very happy that he is present at the meetings in Brazil”said Mauro Vieira, referring to Russian President Vladimir Putin, in an interview with BBC Brasil.
The head of Brazilian diplomacy also devalued the country’s responsibilities before the International Criminal Court (ICC).
In March 2023, a year after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the ICC issued an arrest warrant for Vladimir Putin for war crimes related to the forced deportation of Ukrainian children.
The order meant that the Russian president, for example, did not personally participate in the meeting of the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) that took place last August in the South African city of Johannesburg.
Mauro Vieira, asked about the possibility of Putin being arrested in Brazil, said: “I don’t know. I do not think so. I hope not either. Don’t know. We will not take any initiative to prevent that from happening.”
About whether that is the case “Required to comply?” said “no. There must be order”he stood on it.
Early this month, Brazilian President Lula da Silva confirmed that he will invite his Russian counterpart to the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro, but warned that his country has responsibilities before the International Criminal Court.
“Putin will be invited whether he comes or not, he has a trial [no TPI], you need to evaluate the consequences. It’s not me who can say that. It is a judicial decision and a President of the Republic does not judge judicial decisions, whether he complies with them or not.”said Lula da Silva, quoted by the O Globo newspaper.
“Like [Putin] Come on, you know what will happen. It may or may not happen. He is not part of this court, he is not a signatory, and neither is the United States. Brazil does. Because Brazil is a signatory, Brazil has responsibilities.”the Brazilian president added.
Earlier, in September, Lula da Silva announced that he would invite Putin to the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro in November, also guaranteeing him that he would not be detained, after which he was strongly criticized for the lack of respect for the separation between political powers. and judicial.
Brazil, which has held the G20 presidency since December 1, invited Portugal, Angola, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Spain, Nigeria, Norway and Singapore to observe the organization.
Portugal will be present at more than a hundred working group meetings, at technical and ministerial level, in five Brazilian regions throughout Brazil’s mandate, culminating in the Summit of Heads of State and Government, which will take place in Rio de Janeiro. on November 18 and 19, 2024.
