The Spanish Council of Ministers today approved the appointment of the Secretary of State for Latin America, the Caribbean and Spanish in the World, Juan Fernández Trigo, as the new Ambassador to Portugal, the EFE agency reported.
Before being appointed Secretary of State in July 2021, Fernández Trigo was Head of Mission at the Spanish Embassy in Venezuela when the representation was left without an ambassador because the Madrid government did not recognize the legitimacy of Nicolás Maduro’s regime.
During his diplomatic career, he served as Spanish Ambassador to Haiti, Paraguay and Cuba and as Chief Ambassador of the European Union Delegation to Uruguay.
From 2017 to 2018, he was an advisory member of the Office of the Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation and coordinator of the application of Article 155 of the Spanish Constitution, which provides a coercive mechanism to force an autonomous community to comply with the law when this is a serious violation of the basic text.
