The Russian Foreign Minister highlighted this Thursday the “failure of the West” in trying to cause a Russian “strategic defeat” in Ukraine, stating that Moscow “has become stronger” over the last year in trying to “achieve its military objectives.”
“The West is changing tactics and possibly even thinking about changing its strategy because its plan is suffering a resounding failure,” said Sergei Lavrov, in an interview with Russian state media.
Despite the change in strategy, the Russian leader stressed that the “denazification and disarmament” of Ukraine are “inevitable.”
“As a result of this hybrid war of the West against Russia, (…) Russia has become stronger this year and the unity of our people has increased significantly,” stressed Lavrov, who assured that international sanctions did not achieve their objective.
In this sense, the Russian minister guaranteed that the country is prepared for “any development of events” and highlighted that some senior international officials, such as the United States Secretary of Defense, Lloyd Austin, called Moscow an “enemy.”
“We are ready for anything (…). They have already tried to conquer us more than once,” he stated.
“The world is fed up with the dollar, which is becoming an instrument of influence, a tool to undermine the legitimate competitive positions of countries in different regions and an instrument of interference in internal affairs,” he continued, before arguing that “only “A serious internal crisis can free the United States from its superiority.”
He added: “As long as they have this infallibility, their superiority will be overwhelming.”
Sergei Lavrov also spoke about the peace formula for Ukraine suggested by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, considering it “the fruit of a sick imagination” and pointing out that the leader of Ukraine “betrayed his own people.”
The Russian minister also stated that he sees no signs of a “bright future for the European Union (EU)”, as the process of enlargement of the community bloc progresses.
On 14 December, the European Council decided to open formal EU accession negotiations with Ukraine.
Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, with the argument of protecting the pro-Russian separatist minorities in the east and “denazifying” the neighboring country, independent since 1991 after the disintegration of the former Soviet Union and which has since moved away from Moscow. space of influence and get closer to Europe and the West.
Since autumn, Moscow has increased nightly attacks on Ukrainian cities, at a time when questions are being raised about continued Western military support for kyiv.
The war in Ukraine has already caused tens of thousands of deaths on both sides, but has not seen significant progress in recent months, with the two belligerents remaining irreducible in their territorial positions and without openness to negotiating concessions.
