At least nine people were killed and 50 wounded on Friday in a series of attacks launched by Russia against several cities in Ukraine, including kyiv, Ukrainian authorities said.
In addition to kyiv, Russian bombing targeted the cities of Kharkiv in the northeast, Lviv in the far west, and Odessa in the south.
“In the attacks of the occupation forces against Kharkiv, one person was killed. Eight people were injured,” lamented the head of the local military administration, Oleg Synegubov.
A hospital in Kyivskyi district was damaged, local police said.
kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko announced that seven people are “currently hospitalized in the capital.”
The wave of attacks caused the activation of the air alert throughout Ukraine, around 7:00 a.m. (5:00 a.m. in Lisbon).
Three people were injured in an attack in Konotop, in the Soumy region of northeastern Ukraine, where an apartment block was hit, according to the local military administration. Three Iranian Shahed drones were destroyed at the scene, the military added.
In Odessa, a building was damaged in an overnight attack, but the resulting fire was quickly brought under control, Mayor Gennady Trukhanov said.
This new wave of attacks shows that Ukraine needs “more help” from the international community, said the Ukrainian president’s chief of staff, Volodymyr Zelensky.
“Missiles are flying over our cities again and civilians are the target,” Andriy Yermak reported on the Telegram messaging platform.
“We are doing everything we can to strengthen our air shield. But the world must see that we need more help and resources to end this terror,” Yermak wrote.
The United States on Wednesday granted Ukraine a military aid pact worth $250 million (about €225 million), which includes munitions and air defense systems to respond to Russian attacks.
This new aid is the last tranche available until there is a new vote in the US Congress, where a minority within the Republican Party refuses to allocate more money.
These attacks come after a Storm Shadow missile launched by Ukrainian aviation managed, on Tuesday, to cause the sinking of the Russian landing ship “Novocherkassk” in Crimea.
Russia is suffering “enormous” losses in men and material in its war in Ukraine and its army will emerge “weakened” from the conflict, a senior German army officer said in an interview published today.
“According to data from Western intelligence services, 300,000 Russian soldiers have been killed or seriously wounded and can no longer be mobilized for war,” General Christian Freuding told the German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung.
