5,300 injured and sick people must be transferred abroad from Gaza

About 5,300 people must be evacuated abroad to receive medical care due to a lack of adequate aid in the Gaza Strip, the territory’s health ministry said on Saturday.

“We need to urgently transfer more than 5,300 injured and sick people with serious and complex cases abroad for urgent treatment to save their lives,” said Ashraf Al-Qudra, spokesperson for the Gaza Strip Ministry of Health, who warned that the coordination of the transfer of the wounded to Egypt is going very slowly.

The current mechanism for the daily evacuation of injured or sick people, through the Rafah border crossing to Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula, “does not meet” needs, Al-Qudra said.

Only 1% of the injured were allowed to leave, which “contributes to the killing” of more people every day with urgent medical needs that cannot be met in Gaza, due to the shortage of medicines and basic medical supplies, due to the almost complete imposed siege by Israel, which only gradually allows humanitarian aid.

The Gaza Strip Ministry of Health warns that approximately 50,000 pregnant women “suffer from malnutrition and health complications, especially those with high-risk pregnancies,” and have been displaced as a result of the attacks, as have 1.9 million Gaza residents, i.e. 85 % of the population. the population of the area.

Pregnant women especially suffer from “lack of drinking water, hygiene, food or medical care”, the Ministry of Health reports.

In turn, about 900,000 children are “exposed to the dangers of intense cold, dehydration, malnutrition” and the lack of vaccines for newborns, while infectious diseases spread, he added.

Israel has declared war on Hamas, following the October 7 attack by the group classified as terrorist by the United States and the European Union, and bombed the Gaza Strip, where there is a humanitarian crisis.

Since the war between Israel and the radical Islamist group Hamas began on October 7, more than 21,600 people have been killed and more than 56,000 injured as a result of Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip.

According to the Ministry of Health, most victims are women and children.
