Netanyahu says war ‘will continue for many months’

The war between Israel and the Hamas movement in Gaza, Palestine, “will continue for many months,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said this Saturday.

“We will ensure that Gaza is no longer a threat to Israel,” he stressed at a press conference in Tel Aviv, highlighting that “to obtain an absolute victory” and achieve the objectives “more time will be needed.”

According to Benjamin Netanyahu, this victory will only be achieved when “Hamas is eliminated and the hostages are released.”

The conflict, which has entered its thirteenth week, is being “a complex battle,” acknowledged the head of Government, highlighting that Israeli troops have already “eliminated more than eight thousand terrorists,” including Hamas leaders.

On October 7, Hamas commandos – an Islamist movement considered terrorist by the United States and the European Union, in power in the Gaza Strip since 2007 – launched an unprecedented terrorist attack on Israeli soil, in which they killed 1,139 people, most of them. civilians, according to the most recent report from Tel Aviv authorities.

That day, some 250 people were also kidnapped and taken to Gaza, 129 of whom remain in captivity.

In response, Israel declared war on Hamas and has been bombing the Gaza Strip, which is mired in a serious humanitarian crisis.

Since the start of the conflict, 21,672 Gazans have been killed and 56,165 wounded in Israeli army attacks, according to Palestinian authorities, who say 70% of the victims are women and children.

Today, Gaza’s Health Ministry said at least 165 Palestinians were killed and another 250 wounded in Israeli strikes in the past 24 hours.

Responding to a question about the ongoing negotiations in Cairo (Egypt), Benjamin Netanyahu stated that “Hamas issued a whole series of ultimatums” that were rejected by Israel.

A Hamas delegation arrived in Cairo on Friday to discuss an Egyptian plan to achieve a ceasefire between the sides.

“We see a change [mas] I don’t want to create expectations,” commented Benjamin Netanyahu.

According to the AFP agency, a thousand people gathered this afternoon in Tel Aviv to demand from the Israeli government “a comprehensive plan” for the return of all the hostages and to reject the “partial agreement” that only allowed some of them to be rescued.
