At least 13 people have died, including three children, after a Russian military plane crashed into a building in the city of Yeisk, on the shores of the Azov Sea near Ukraine, authorities announced on Tuesday.
In a new assessment of the incident, which took place on Monday, the Emergency Operations Headquarters in the Krasnodar region also said that 19 people were injured and search and rescue operations had already ended.
The Russian Defense Ministry had reported that the cause of the accident was the failure of one of the Su-34 model aircraft’s engines shortly after taking off on a training flight, stating that the crew managed to eject in time.
“The reason for the accident is that one of the engines caught fire during takeoff, indicated by the pilots who managed to eject,” the Defense Ministry said.
Eyewitnesses warned that the entire nine-story building was engulfed in flames, according to the Russian news agency TASS.
