The explosions that occurred this Wednesday in Iran during the tribute to General Qassim Soleimani caused 73 deaths and more than 170 injuries, state television reported, cited by the French agency AFP.
A spokesman for Iran’s emergency organization said two explosions were recorded at the Kerman cemetery, about 820 kilometers southeast of the capital, Tehran, during the tribute to Soleimani.
“The incident is a terrorist attack,” said the deputy governor of Kerman province, Rahman Jalali, quoted by state television.
General Qassim Soleimani, head of the Revolutionary Guard’s elite Quds Force, was assassinated by the United States in Baghdad in 2020.
Thousands of people gathered at the cemetery to pay tribute to Soleimani, considered a martyr of the revolution in Iran.
Soleimani, head of the Revolutionary Guard’s elite Quds Force, was the architect of Iran’s regional military activities and is hailed as an icon among supporters of the Iranian theocracy, according to the US news agency AP.
