The workers of the Iberia aviation company enter this Friday strike for four days, which has already forced the cancellation of more than 400 flights in Spain. The strike continues until January 8 and covers one of the busiest weekends of the year, which cIt coincides with the Three Kings Day holiday and the end of the Christmas holidays.
According to the company, on this first day of the strike only 17% of the workers joined the protest and minimum services are being provided normally. The strike was called after Iberia lost ground handling services at eight of the country’s main airports and the company’s refusal to provide self-handling to companies in its International Airlines Group (IAG).
More than eight thousand workers ground handling services for passengers and luggage are called for this strike, which will directly affect more than 45 thousand passengers and many others, who may suffer delays in baggage collection or longer waits to get on and off the planes. The airline has already managed to provide a solution to 90% of the affected passengers: 80% had their reservations changed on other flights and 10% were refunded.
Iberia plans to carry out 836 flights of the 1,106 scheduled for these days, including almost all long-haul flights. Last week, the company had already announced the cancellation of 444 flights.
The strike occurs after all attempts at understanding failed between unions and employers. The company indicates that Negotiations will continue in the coming days.but warns that, even if the strike is called off, There are no longer conditions to restore canceled flightsdue to the technical complexity that this type of operations requires and because many of the passengers have already been refunded or rebooked on other flights.
