At least five people are trapped in a cave in southwestern Slovenia, unable to get out due to the water level, which rose due to heavy rains in the region, local authorities announced this Sunday.
The group, which has been trapped in the Krizna Jama cave since Saturday, includes a family of three and two guides, according to the Associated Press (AP) news agency.
Rescuers said divers reached the group, took them to a safe location dedicated to such emergencies and set up a heated shelter.
According to the director of the Slovenian Caving Association, Igor Benko, all five people are fine.
The group entered the cave on Saturday morning to visit the five-mile cave system with a chain of underground lakes.
The AP also cites Benko’s statements to the Slovenian agency STA, which said it could take a few days before the pass is safe again.
Currently, 35 lifeguards and eight divers, assisted by 11 firefighters, are participating in the operation.
