At least two people were killed and 11 wounded on Monday following a suicide bombing near the Russian embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan. advances the Reuters news agency.
A suicide bomber detonated several explosives near the entrance to the Russian diplomatic mission, located in the southwest of the Afghan capital, according to international agencies citing local authorities. The attacker was shot dead by police before he managed to reach the embassy gates.
“The suicide bomber, before hitting the target, was recognized and shot by Russian embassy guards,” Mawlawi Sabir, head of the police district where the attack took place, told Reuters.
“Among the dead is an Afghan official from the Russian embassy and a civilian,” said the same source, noting that among the 11 wounded was a member of the Taliban security forces.
The Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed, however, that the explosion killed two embassy employees, without giving further details.
The Russian state agency RIA Novosti also reported the attack, saying the incident occurred when a Russian diplomatic official left the embassy to call visa applicants waiting there.
Russia is one of the few countries that has maintained diplomatic representation in Kabul since the Taliban regained power about a year ago.
