The Christie’s auction house sold this Thursday, for just over 300 thousand euros, a manuscript of the script for the film Contempt with annotations by Jean-Luc Gordard himself and notes by his main characters was revealed this Friday.
The manuscript belonged to actress Brigitte Bardot, who starred in the film, alongside Michel Piccoli, and she gave it to a friend, photographer Ghislain “Jicky” Dussart.
The value of the piece had been estimated between 120 and 180 thousand euros, but at auction it reached 302,400 euros, Christie’s detailed.
The document consists of 59 numbered pages, written in blue ink, and 24 typed pages, 17 of which are full of annotations and corrections by Godard, who died on September 13 at the age of 91.
It is the complete manuscript of the first version of the film, adapted from a novel by Alberto Moravia, without the nudity imposed on the director by the American production company of the film.
In an Oct. 13 statement announcing the auction, Christie’s also explained that the manuscript includes excerpts from the official poster, including the film’s title and Bardot’s name, along with notes from Austrian director Fritz, Moravia Piccoli Lang, and the actor. American Jack Palance.
The document had been exposed, until today’s auction, at Christie’s headquarters in Paris, in the center of the French capital.
