Kherson’s pro-Russian government has accused Ukrainian troops of killing four people and injuring ten in a bombing raid on the Antonovsky Bridge in this Russian-annexed area of eastern Ukraine.
“As a result of bombing by terrorists of the army of [o Presidente ucraniano Volodymyr] Zelensky in Kherson, three people died, including children, and ten civilians were injured,” Kherson governor Vladimir Rogov said initially on the Telegram platform.
A few hours later, Kherson’s deputy governor Kiril Stremusov said the total death toll had risen to four, but denied that children were killed in the attack.
Also on Telegram, Stremusov added that none of the injured were in danger.
The Russian news agency TASS said Ukraine has launched 12 missiles, 11 of which were allegedly shot down by Russian air defenses. The attack also reportedly hit 12 vehicles near the bridge.
The Antonovsky Bridge is one of the main supply routes for Russian troops in southern Ukraine. Therefore, the Ukrainian army would have an interest in attacking infrastructure, just like the Kerch Bridge in Crimea.
It is not the first time that the Ukrainian army has attacked the bridge: on July 19, Russian troops announced that the structure had been seriously damaged after an attack by Ukraine.
About 15,000 people withdrawn from Kherson
About 15,000 people have already been evacuated from Ukraine’s Kherson region, on the left bank of the Dnieper River, Stremusov said Thursday.
On October 13, Moscow-appointed interim governor of the Kherson region, Vladimir Rogov, requested the civilian population of that part of the territory, on the right bank of the Dnieper, to move to the other bank, in the face of the advancing Ukrainian troops.
In total, the pro-Russian authorities plan to evacuate between 50,000 and 60,000 residents within six days.
Moreover, they have already installed the power structures of the civil and military administration outside the regional capital, including on the other side of the river.
The military offensive launched by Russia in Ukraine on February 24 has already resulted in more than 13 million people having fled — more than six million internally displaced persons and more than 7.7 million to European countries — according to the latest UN data, which ranks this refugee crisis as the worst in Europe since World War II (1939-1945).
The Russian invasion was condemned by the international community at large, which responded by sending arms to Ukraine and imposing political and economic sanctions on Russia.
The UN has presented 6,306 civilians killed and 9,602 injured since the start of the war, which has entered its 239th day today, stressing that these numbers are far below the real one.
