What diplomatic strategy to use with Vladimir Putin. While the Russian president finds himself increasingly isolated as his army withdraws into Ukrainian territory, Catherine Colonna, the minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, estimated that “reinforcing his isolation would not be a good option.”
“Putin is probably isolated in his very strange view of the world and how it could be managed. More isolation would not be a good option,” he said from Washington, during a meeting with his US counterpart Anthony Blinken.
“Are all of our messages coming through clearly? It’s not enough, but we need to take this opportunity to explain to him how we see things and what we think he should be doing,” he added.
A decisive G20?
From the beginning of the conflict, Emmanuel Macron had shown his desire to maintain a link with the Kremlin strongman. The G20 summit, to be held in mid-November and attended by the main leaders, including Vladimir Putin, could be a diplomatic turning point.
If Moscow assures that the Russian leader is ready to meet with Joe Biden for the occasion, the American president said that he “did not intend” to meet with his Russian counterpart.
