North Korea: Kim Jong Un wants to “strengthen combat capabilities”

Inter-Korean relations are at an all-time low and earlier this year Pyongyang named South Korea its “main enemy” and threatened war for any violation of its territory “even 0.001 millimeters.”

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un inspected a tank unit that invaded Seoul during the Korean War (1950-1953) and asked to intensify combat preparations, state media reported on Monday (March 25).

Kim Jong Un visited Seoul’s 105th Armored Division, Ryu Kyong Su, on Sunday, the official KCNA news agency said, and state media showed him reviewing plans he said would aim to attack South Korea. “The division was the first to rush towards Seoul and raise the flag of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) on the puppet capitol building,” KCNA said.

This tank unit “performed notable feats in many battles during the last Fatherland Liberation War,” the news agency added.

“Strong will to annihilate the enemy”

Technically, the two countries are still at war since 1953 because it was an armistice and not a peace treaty that ended their three-year armed conflict. Kim Jong Un supervised the unit’s exercise and said he was “very satisfied” with the level of readiness of the tank crews and their “strong desire to annihilate the enemy,” KCNA said.

The leader also called for more “ideological education” to help soldiers go “further in war preparations and strengthen their combat capability.”

Kim visited the tank unit’s cafeteria and monitored the soldiers’ food, as the country appears to face food shortages.

Supervisors should “always pay great attention to improving the diet of military personnel” to “ensure the regular supply of meat, vegetables and various foods in a timely manner,” he said.
