Seven killed in Taliban operation against Islamic State jihadists in Kabul

At least six members of the Islamic State (IS) extremist group and a Taliban were killed in a night operation by the Taliban in the Afghan capital, according to information from the interim government of Islamic fundamentalists, released this Saturday.

In a statement, Taliban spokesman Bilal Karimi said the clash took place at Kabul’s No. 8 police station and one Taliban was still injured.

“As a result of yesterday’s operation [sexta-feira] overnight at an Islamic State hideout in Kabul, six members were killed and their weapons, grenades and explosives, as well as a car, were seized,” Karimi said in the statement.

The same information, says the Efe news agency, adds that “a combatant [talibã] was killed and another wounded.

The Taliban accuse the now-dead IS of having recently carried out attacks, such as the September 23 attack on the Wazir Mohammad Akbar Khan mosque, which left at least seven people dead and more than 40 injured.

These IS members were also blamed for the September 30 attack on a school belonging to the Shiite Hazara minority in Kabul, in which 53 people were killed and 110 wounded, most of them young women and children.

The Taliban’s return to power in August 2021 ended two decades of war in Afghanistan and led to a significant reduction in violence, but attacks have increased in recent months.

A regional branch of the Islamic State extremist group has claimed responsibility for several attacks on Hazaras, whom it considers to be heretics.
