The President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron, congratulated this Monday, March 25, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, winner of the presidential elections in Senegal, and hoped to “work with him”, in a message on the social network X.
“Congratulations to Bassirou Diomaye Faye on his election as President of the Republic of Senegal. I wish him all my best wishes and look forward to working with him,” wrote Emmanuel Macron.
The “choice to break up”
The clear winner of Sunday’s vote, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, assured on Monday that his country will continue to be the “safe and reliable ally” of all “respectful” foreign partners, during his first public appearance since the announcement of his historic election.
Bassirou Diomaye Faye, who turned 44 on Monday and was released from prison just ten days ago, presented himself as the “breakthrough choice.”
He will become the fifth and youngest president of this West African country of 18 million inhabitants after his main opponent recognized, on Monday, his success in the first round of the presidential elections, which constitutes a political earthquake.
France, Senegal’s former colonial power and its first political and economic partner, hopes to maintain strong relations with Senegal, although it has just suffered several setbacks in the region. In particular, it had to break all military cooperation with Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger.
